CALSTAR 11 was established in 2009 as a base for our first MD 902 helicopter dedicated to inter-facility missions. Co-located with the CALSTAR 70 fixed wing base at McClellan Park, CALSTAR 11 has expanded CALSTAR’s inter-facility patient transport capabilities. A helicopter is better suited than a fixed wing aircraft for flights involving a helipad, EMS LZ, helicopter IFR approach, low IFR weather not associated with icing conditions, route and weather favoring NVD use and relatively short-distance flights. The synergistic airplane/helicopter base allows CALSTAR to be more responsive and efficient, using the more appropriate aircraft for a specific patient flight.

Flight nurses are trained in both types of aircraft and are capable of participating in neonatal team flights, pediatric team flights, hybrid flights and CALSTAR crew flights. The base maintenance technicians are trained to work on both type aircraft, and the on-duty pilots maintain close communication, helping each other with technical aspects and in determining which aircraft is most appropriate for a specific flight. Driven by a commitment to our patients and to each other, the members of CALSTAR 11’s high performance team work together to deliver the best care possible.

In December 2010, CALSTAR 11 also began accepting emergency scene transport requests, and is the only helicopter EMS service based in Sacramento.
