CALSTAR 4 opened for service April 15, 1998 in the dynamic and progressive community of Ukiah, CA. Surrounded by vineyards, pear orchards, and the forested coastal mountains, Ukiah is the seat of Mendocino County in Northern California.

We currently fly both the MD 902 Explorer and the Agusta 109 Mark II plus, the fastest air ambulance in the CALSTAR fleet. The Agusta is small, carries one patient at a time, and is able to land at all the hospitals in our service area. The Agusta is equipped with IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) navigation to handle the variety of weather, and night vision equipment for the dark nights we experience on a regular basis.

We serve an extensive and diverse area—a 150-mile radius that encompasses rural community hospitals such as Ukiah Valley Medical Center, Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits, and Mendocino Coast District Hospital in Fort Bragg.

CALSTAR 4 is the most rural and one of the busiest CALSTAR bases. The closest Level II Trauma Center is Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, an hour away from Ukiah by ground ambulance. Air Ambulance service is essential to this community.

About half of our transports are 911 calls and half are Interfacility Transfers (IFTs), moving patients from our local hospitals to bigger hospitals with more specialty services such as the cardiac services at St. Helena Hospital. It is not unusual for CALSTAR 4 to transport patients to UCSF, UC Davis, or Stanford.

The nature of the communities we serve (rural, poorly insured and uninsured) lends itself to our Membership Program, and CALSTAR 4 is proud to boast the largest concentration of CALSTAR Members.

Our nonprofit community service is committed to making a difference. In addition to life-saving air ambulance service, with two critical care registered nurses caring for the people of our own home towns, we can also be found at many community events like first responder trainings, “Every 15 Minute” drills, and health and safety fairs. We also provide outreach education to our fellow Emergency Medical Service providers.

We are grateful for the support given by our community, especially the following organizations:

Allen-Heath Memorial Foundation
TR Eriksen Foundation
George and Ruth Bradford Foundation
Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation
Wal-Mart (Ukiah and Clearlake)
Wells Fargo Foundation
