GERIATRIC PATHOPHYSIOLOGIC CONDITIONS:

SEPSIS AND ORTHOPEDIC TRAUMA

Course Description: We will take an in-depth look at two specific pathophysiologic conditions of the geriatric population—Sepsis and Orthopedic Trauma—focusing on the geriatric population’s physiologic differences. Geriatric patients are different. If we begin with this knowledge and specific plans of care, our patients’ pathways are more guided, and we can have a significant effect not only on their survival, but also on returning them home with a quality of life.

Instructor:
Suz Roehl, RN - Critical Care Flight Nurse with CALIFORNIA Shock Trauma Air Rescue (CALSTAR). Suz has 28 years of critical care and emergency nursing in a diverse background of Pediatric ICU, Burn ICU, CV ICU, Level 1 Trauma ED, Flight Nursing, and Clinical Nursing Educator for ICU and ED.

This course has been approved for 4 hours of continuing education by an approved California EMS CE provider.

SEPSIS

Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center Auditorium 1010 Murray Avenue San Luis Obispo, CA 93405

Course Description: Understanding SIRS and sepsis enables the practitioner to initiate early goal-directed therapies to minimize the loss of limb or life. For those victims whose sepsis have not been identified in time or managed properly, the progression can lead to septic shock. Mortality is greater than 50% once septic shock sets in. This three-hour lecture will cover the clinical presentation of Septic shock, diagnostics, and clinical management, including early goal-directed therapy.
